Fear of the Lord

September 24, 2009

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” That’s how Proverbs 9:10 reads, and that is one of the first ones we looked at last night during class. We were focusing on wisdom, and that verse reminds us how important it is to understand that wisdom begins with knowing and respecting God. If I try to develop any kind of wisdom without God in the picture, I have lost sight of what it means to be truly wise.

So, as we thought about this point, we watched a clip from the movie “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed,” by Ben Stein. He came out with this controversial documentary on Intelligent Design a couple of years ago, and though there would be some things I disagree with him on, I liked two things about the movie – 1. Good interview moments with guys like Richard Dawkins and 2. Nice Ferris Bueller’s Day Off reference at the end. Whatever you think about Ben Stein or the movie, (and the links that pop up when searching for this topic use some rough language and arguing to fire back at the movie – consider yourself warned) I think this is the best part. This clip is an interview he had with Dawkins, who has authored many books trying to disprove the existence of God (which are popular sellers but aren’t taken seriously even by many atheist scientists and researchers). He just recently began children’s camps for the purpose of teaching atheism.

Here’s another warning – he begins this interview by quoting from his book, which makes some harsh statements about God. But what I thought was interesting was his explanation that there is evidence of design in the universe, and the possibility was that the design was seeded by…wait for it…aliens. Having said that, he also stated that belief in God would be inconsistent with anything else he had said. Really? Belief in aliens is a better explanation than belief in God for design in the universe?

If that sounds foolish, it may be because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. What do you think?

Wow, kids camps. He seems to care a lot about something that he does not believe exists. Makes you think.

Thanks Andrew. Good to see that interview.
