The Magi Project

September 22, 2009

For those of us at Crittenden Drive, Sunday was capped off in a really special way. We went to the Multi-Purpose room and ate together (of course, we had to get that out of the way before we could work), and then began assembling “Magi Boxes.” The Magi Project is an annual effort among congregations to put together Christmas presents for children in poverty-stricken areas of the world. We do it early so they can get there in time for Christmas.  The Healing Hands Organization in Nashville coordinates this project, and Mission Lazarus, a mission work in Honduras, is our contact point for distributing the boxes. A few years ago, one of the Deacons initiated CD’s participation, and we have some members that plan for supplies and save toys, toothbrushes, etc. year round in anticipation of it.

We have a few members that coordinate it now, and they had the room set up for an assembly line. Toys, health products, pencils, pens, towels, notepads, action figures (including a few Spidermen, which I made sure went in the boys boxes I packed), etc. were all lined up on the table. Everyone would grab a box, some wrapping paper, and fill it up. Chad Hedgepath (who worked along with his wife Shelley at Mission Lazarus until recently moving back to the states) hooked us up with some inexpensive Spanish New Testaments, so we were able to put one of those in each box as well. Of course, after I filled up a few boxes, Luke decided he didn’t understand why none of the toys were for him, so he and I had to go to another part of the Multi-Purpose Room to play. I watched our church family, working, talking, and laughing together, and just had one of those moments when you think “This is what it is all about.” Then, of course, I was snapped out of my trance by realizing Luke was halfway down the hallway, running toward the auditorium. But you understand.

When everything was counted, we had packed 166 boxes. The really neat part is that alot of congregations are involved in this – here is a video Mission Lazarus put out that tells the story of last year’s Magi gift delivery. It is worth the time to watch when you get a chance. Mission Lazarus is doing some great work for God!
