I Need Some Help!

December 21, 2009

Ok, you probably already knew that – there are a lot of areas in which I could use some help. But, I am thinking of something specific where I need your feedback.

At Crittenden Drive, we have been trying to find ways to reach out and make our presence known in our community in new ways. We have engaged our community in some new events, and we are planning more of those. We have been able to make some progress with our newly redesigned website – we are reaching a group we were not previously reaching. In town, we have a radio station that it seems like everyone listens to. I have never lived in a place where so many people in town listened to a radio station. So, we are thinking about doing some 60 second radio spots in prime listening time.

Here is my goal – a message that is not “preachy,” just maybe an observation or two and an invitation to come to a worship assembly or check out our website. The goal is to reach people who are not currently thinking about church or the Bible, using a brief statement to provoke thought, and let them know who we are. This is not designed to be a sermon for those who are already Christians. I also realize that we likely won’t have people coming to our worship services simply because of those messages, but I think it could be one other way to plant the seed for people that if they ever need help, they can turn to us.

I know some of you have experience with this kind of thing. What have you learned? Those of you who have heard spots like that – What have you liked? What have you not liked? What kinds of topics do you think should be covered? Do you have any catchy nicknames or titles for these radio spots? (I’m counting on you, JP.) Just leave a comment and let me know. Thanks for your help!

Andrew – look online for Max E Dunham (sp?) he used to do something similar for Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis. I’m sure you can find audio links. I know at least one (maybe two) book was compiled from his radio spots.
