Belem, Brazil Mission Work

October 27, 2009

I’m trying to discipline myself to post regularly, and one of the things I want to do with this blog is highlight mission work and ministry efforts in different places. Partly because you may want to find out more about them, and partly because I enjoy keeping up with friends and people I have met who are doing awesome things for God. I thought I would start with the work that is currently being planned by a team that includes some of our closest friends – Nick and Amy Fowler.

Ver-oPeso-Belem

Amy and Kathryn have been best friends since they were born (that’s literally true), and so when I was dating Kathryn and Nick was dating Amy, he had to hang out with me. We got to be good friends, watched alot of movies, and even survived Greek together. Ever since I can remember knowing Nick, he has always had a passion for mission work, and Amy has always been involved in mission work and serving others as well. After they were part of a Let’s Start Talking trip to Porto Allegre, Brazil in 2001, they continued to keep in touch with the contacts there. A few years ago, they made the decision to be a part of a mission team to a large city in Brazil. After years of praying, planning, raising funds, etc. God has put together a great team, partnered them with a great sponsoring congregation, and they are currently in Lubbock, TX going through training at Sunset School of Biblical Studies in conjunction with Missions Resource Network. They leave in Spring of 2010, with the goal of planting a congregation in Belem, Brazil.

Their website is http://www.lightforbrazil.com (also on the blogroll to the right), and you can get more info on what they will be doing, as well as info on their team members. Their son Jonah is only 3 1/2 weeks older than Luke (we joke about them being forced to be friends whether they like it or not), and he went on a survey trip with his parents not too long ago. Being an international traveler before your 2nd birthday is pretty impressive!

While they do have a sponsoring congregation (Mount Juliet Church of Christ), they are still doing some fund-raising. So if you or anyone you know is looking for a team to support, this would be a great one. I am excited to see what God will do through their work in Brazil!
